Sigma Space Forces

The origin of the Sigma Space Forces can be traced back to 2047, when the bulk of non-commissioned military personnel and the junior officer corps stationed on the Journey’s End gathered in the dining hall of New Haven Air Force Base and formed the Journey's End Soldiers Union. Although JESU members comprised more than 80% of the colonial garrison, it faced severe persecution from UN Spacy Central Command and was forced to operate mostly in secret for the first several years of its existence. The aims of the Soldiers Union and its leader, Marcus Kurita, were simple at first, and operations were restricted mostly to mutual aid efforts for personnel and their families, as well as low-level circumvention of Earth’s authority on local matters. JESU rose to prominence in the aftermath of the Earth-Furion War, as the people of the hard-hit Sigma Region colonies became increasingly alienated from Earth. Emboldened by this wave of support, JESU emerged from the underground of Journey’s End and openly engaged in political activism. It was, and continues to be, an instrumental part of the separatist Journeymen movement which swept into power on Journey’s End.

Through the party, JESU spread its philosophy to nearby colonies, with unexpected results. Nuevo Tejas, famous for its independent-minded society, was expected to receive the idea of a soldiers’ union eagerly. This same independent-mindedness, however, led the Nuevo Tejas colonial militia and elite Rangers to decide that the JESU model would have been redundant in their already-loose military structure. Some analysts suggest that the inability of a ‘Nuevo Tejas Soldiers Union’ to gain the confidence of military personnel there has much to do with that colony declining to join the Sigma Federation.

On the other hand, they made surprising progress in the industrial monarchy of Vergessenheitstor. Archon Sigmund Kronberg faced considerable resistance to his plan to establish himself as the colony’s hereditary ruler. In order to guarantee his hold on power, he needed the loyalty of the planet’s military forces – loyalty which the soldiers agreed to offer in exchange for the Archon’s tolerance of a JESU-style organization. The official formation of the Vergessenheitstor Soldiers Union (VSU) stalled the momentum of Kronberg’s opposition, and its alliance with JESU forged the largest military force in the known galaxy next to the UN Spacy: the Sigma Space Forces.

UN Spacy

The United Nations Space Forces were established in early 2001 alongside the formation of the United Nations government under Prime Minister Harlan J. Niven, in anticipation of impending attack by a hostile alien force. Originally comprised of armed forces from the world's leading military-industrial powers - the United States, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Japan and Germany - it rapidly grew in size and capability as more nations signed on with the Niven government. Its formation was also the spark that ignited the Unification War, as nationalist groups around the globe and across the political spectrum rose up in armed resistance against the establishment of a standing UN army. Thus, UN Spacy's preparation exercises for future confrontation with alien life forms became all too real as the United Nations unleashed it upon fellow human beings aligned with the growing Anti-UN movement.

While the United Forces were ultimately victorious, it had suffered staggering casualties over the eight-year course of the global conflict. Most of the older, experienced military personnel were killed in the first six years of the war, giving rise to a generation of soldiers far younger than was traditionally accepted in Earth's modern history. For example, two of UN Spacy's most respected war heroes, Commander Misa Hayase, first officer of the SDF Macross; and Lieutenant Maximilian Jenius, ace VF pilot, were only nineteen years of age when the Zentraedi Vrlitwhai fleet arrived at Earth. UN Spacy was nearly destroyed along with the population of Earth during the conflict with this warlike alien species, but as it had done many times in the previous war, it managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The overwhelming Zentraedi force was fought to a draw, and the Space War Armistice was signed.

With peace again secured, the new United Earth Government and UN Spacy turned their attention to the stars. To prevent the human race from being extinguished in a single attack, as the Zentraedi had done, Earth sent successive colony fleets into the vast expanse and seeded mankind among the stars. In this new Space Age, UN Spacy became the keepers of order and security in Earth-controlled space, charged with protection of the colony worlds and the elimination of any foe that would seek to exterminate them. In 2030, Vrlitwhai Kridanik, former commander of the Zentraedi battle fleet that attacked Earth twenty years earlier, was installed as the head of UN Spacy. In the capable hands of this brilliant military leader, Earth's military arm became one of the most powerful forces in the galaxy.
